Punta Arenas (Chile)
From the Beagle Channel, we entered the O'Brien Channel, and few other before getting to the Pacific. We then proceeded
to the Magellan Straits (North of the Beagle Channel), it defines the limit of the continental South America.

Punta Arenas is on the north shore of the Magellan Straits. As such, it is the southern most city on the continental South America
(where Ushuaia was the southern most city, everything south of the Magellan Straits are considered islands).

As the Magellan Straits is the most northerly (for South America) pass between Atlantic and Pacific, Punta Arenas was a major shipping stop before the Panama Canal.
This "colonial time" residence is now an Hotel.

The Pioneer Cemetery is most interesting. While full of
elaborate tombstones, I also has immaculately maintained trees.

Puerto Montt (Chile)

From Punta Arenas, we spent a day a sea, making our way northbound toward Puerto Montt.
Half the way was on the Pacific, the rest along inland waterways. We detoured inland for a view of the Amalia Glacier. Unfortunately overcast and fog did not allow for good pictures.
This (unimpressed by it's hat) lama was a major attraction on the Puerto Montt pier.

For that day, our tour was to an ecological lodge,
The Alerce Mountain Lodge

where we took a long nature walk.

Leaving Puerto Montt, we had another day at sea
before our destination, Valparaiso. We used the opportunity to review the highlights of the cruise with our table mates.

From Valparaiso, a two hour bus transfer to Santiago gave us a good view of this wine growing area. Nice and warm climate as you can see from this picture (during a rest stop).
